By conducting focus groups online, we can deliver results faster than traditional focus groups because our online panel of scientific customers, The Science Advisory Board, shortens the recruiting process, and both clients and participants do not spend time traveling. Additionally, because the discussion is captured electronically, there is no need for clients to wait for the sessions to be manually recorded and transcribed. In most cases, online focus groups are also more cost effective than traditional methods because they eliminate phone, facility rental, travel and transcriber expenses. Furthermore, it is considerably more expensive to compensate participants to come to a central location for a focus group than to ask them to participate online.

In addition to the speed and cost effectiveness of online focus groups, other benefits include:
  • Both respondents and clients can participate from the their own home or office
  • Geographic scope of participants, in any one group, can be worldwide
  • Clients are able to observe the focus group as it is in session and communicate with the moderator to influence the direction of the discussion without interrupting the session
  • Respondents participating in online focus groups tend to be more objective and straight to the point when they are not communicating face-to-face
  • Participants are not intimidated by the presence of a video recorder or a one-way mirror
